The Fourth of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. Set right in the heart of summer it’s a day dedicated to lounging out by the water and watching the fireworks illuminate the sky. 

When I was younger, the Fourth of July festivities really started on the Third of July. Every year the town I grew up in hosted a parade that had accumulated so much popularity and nostalgia that we had to drop off our chairs the night before to ensure we got a spot. So annually, on July 3rd, we would drive downtown, rope off our chairs, and get dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant. 

The next morning we would wake up at 7 am and start the short trek downtown. The parade started at 8 am every year and for us 8-year-olds, it was the highlight of our week. Each group, from the high school cheerleaders to the local band, drove by bearing bags of candy that we would scream and beg for. Grabbing jolly ranchers, tootsie rolls, and anything we could get our hands on, it felt like Halloween dressed in red, white, and blue.
